This Project Space exhibition is a rotating presentation of works produced in response to the Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society’s Common Ground Dinner Series. Based on the Making Treaty 7 methodology, this dinner series explored the theme of The Land through eight sub-themes: Energy, Agriculture, Education, Law, Culture, Borders, Safety and Security, and Medicine.

‘Night Comes On’ is a video installation comprised of sixty 8” LED screens housed in and among ninety-nine black wooden boxes. Each screen contains a looping video depicting human activity within a domestic window frame, as seen from the exterior of a building. The source footage used for this work came from wide shots of glassy apartment buildings in downtown Vancouver, shot at night during a firework festival, which prompted many residents to peer out of their windows. Arranged in the exhibition space, the stacks of screens and boxes reference an active urbanscape environment – a city in motion.

Estranged Setting presents two sculptures in an immersive painted environment. The works, Bird Factory (2016) and Trawl (2015), depict shifting anatomies that embody the complexities of contemporary consumption, industrial fishing, and agriculture. In Bird Factory, poultry populate a structure whose appearance hovers between that of a chicken’s body and an industrial farming complex. Cartoonish at a glance, the work plays with pop representations of the animal as a façade for the darker nature of its life within the food production system.

Our relationship to place is a strange one: why is it that a feeling or memory about a particular place or time can be more vivid than others? How do significant, and seemingly insignificant, moments lodge within our sense of self? Is it possible that a certain place or experience, no matter how small, can define part of who we are?

Dandy Lines is an exhibition of cosmic country embroidery that references Western fashion through the cyclical, transformative theories of craftwork and animation. It revisits the histories of the decorative and brings to the surface tensions between labour and identity, the body and the psyche.

‘A Chicken in Every Pot or How to Cook Your Own Goose’ takes a critical yet humorous look at some of Calgary’s local histories and contemporary development in and around the neighbourhoods of Inglewood, Ramsay, and the Stampede Park. Utilizing the structure and aesthetics of a midway carnival game to both relate to and comment on a century of immigration to the city, economic growth, changing social mores, and contemporary values, ‘A Chicken in Every Pot or How to Cook Your Own Goose’ asks if you can’t beat the house, can you really build your own?

Chromaphoria is an installation that investigates the effects of coloured light on interior space and visual perception. The illusory quality of additive colour mixing is the core concept behind this work: the use of various artificial light sources and light-reflecting surfaces produce a euphoric experience of constantly changing conditions of light and colour.

Michelangelo Antonioni concludes his sketch for a film Just for Staying Together with a question: “I’ve always wondered whether it’s always right to provide an ending for stories, whether literary, theatrical, or cinematic. Once it’s been firmly channelized a story’s in danger of dying inwardly unless you give it another dimension, unless you let its tempo prolong itself in that external world where we, the protagonists of all stories, live.

‘airtime’ is a site-specific spatial intervention that is a continuation of Ferguson’s recent interest in exploring the potential of material. Through the cutting and manipulation of vinyl and linoleum flooring products, Ferguson makes sculptures and installations that work with the material’s versatile physical capabilities, and reveal its capacity for simultaneous structure and textile-like drapery.

In this new site-specific work, Lethbridge-based artist Corinne Thiessen traces the recurring tension among composure and chaos, regimented uniformity and self-conscious release. Using a constructed forest of fragmented trunks salvaged from fallen trees around Lethbridge, Chronic performs an endless choreography of collapse, a cycle of strain and release that speaks to Thiessen’s interest in thinking of failure as an ever-dependable chorus.
