Scenic Route

Dagmara Genda

Sublime experience, picturesque paysage, valuable resource, endangered ecosystem, national symbol: all these, and more, describe our varied experiences of the Canadian landscape. Canada has been built on the myth of a vast empty wilderness that can be visited and observed by taking carefully prescribed passages, or as we like to say, the scenic route. What counts as scenery? How do scenic routes shape our view of nature and ourselves? Dagmara Genda will discuss these questions in relation to her new series of collage works that explore and pervert a scenic image of nature.
