About Andrea Chung

Andrea Chung is a research-based artist who lives and works in San Diego. Through her art practice, she explores the relationship between colonial and colonized cultures, especially in relation to labour and materials. She incorporates significant materials, often which are perishable, of the cultures she studies in her work.

Chung’s work has been exhibited at museums and biennales including the J. Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles (2021); Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco (2019); Prospect 4, New Orleans (2017); and the Jamaica Biennale, Kingston (2017). Select solo exhibitions have been shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2022); Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2017); and the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, University of California, Davis. Her work is held in the collections of Harvard University, J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Smith College Museum of Art, among others.

Chung has participated in multiple residencies including at the Women’s Studio Workshop, New York (2019), Headlands Centre for the Arts, Sausalito (2012), and the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (2008). She holds a BFA in Illustration from the Parson School of Design, New York (2000) and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore (2008).
