About Dinh Q. Lê

Dinh Q. Lê (b. 1968-d. 2024) was a Vietnamese-born multidisciplinary artist whose work revolves around themes of identity, history, and memory. Through his work, he combined his own experiences and memories with media depictions of war, displacement, and diasporic experiences from the perspective of Vietnam and America. Lê has exhibited at multiple solo and group exhibitions at major institutions including the Musée du quai Branly, Paris (2022); San Jose Museum of Art (2018); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2005); and has participated in the 2013 Carnegie International, 2008 Singapore Biennale, and dOCUMENTA (13), among others. His work is held in the collections of Tate Modern, London; Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill; and the Singapore Art Museum to name a few.

Lê was the recipient of several awards including the Prince Claus Fund Award (2010), Gunk Foundation Public Project Grant (1998), and the Dupont Fellowship (1994). He held a BA in Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1989) and an MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York (1992). Lê co-founded the Vietnam Foundation for the Arts (VNFA), an organization that supports Vietnamese artists in connecting their work around the world.

The Colony was commissioned by Artangel, London; Ikon, Birmingham; Han Nefkens H+F Collection; Proyecto Amil, Lima, with additional support from Catherine Petitgas, Private Collection, New York, Shoshana Wayne Gallery. Produced by Artangel and TANQ Studios, this project was supported by Arts Council England, Artangel International Circle, Special Angels, Guardian Angels and The Company of Angels.
