
About Hank Willis Thomas
Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist based out of Brooklyn, New York. His work focuses on themes relating to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture. Thomas has exhibited throughout the United States at the International Center of Photography, New York (2013); Baltimore Museum of Art (2009); Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (2008); and abroad at the Hong Kong Arts Centre (2018); Musée du Quai Branly, Paris (2016); and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2015); among other distinguished institutions.
Public installations include The Embrace, Boston Common (2023); and The Truth Booth, Brooklyn (2016). His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; among other institutions. His written work has been published in All Things Being Equal…, Aperture (2018); Pitch Blackness, Aperture (2008); and Winter in America, 81 Press (2006).
Thomas holds a BFA in Photography and Africana Studies from New York University (1998), an MFA in Photography and an MA in Visual Criticism from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco (2004), and an honorary doctorate in Philosophy from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Arts, Portland (2017).
