Bridge Space: Tap, Tap & Unwrap

February 15 - June 16, 2024

Tap, Tap & Unwrap is an exhibition of videos made by nine youth: Anna, Dana, Emeline, Lee, Lynn, Mariève, Naila, Olivia, and Raine – from a workshop series held on February 3 & 4, which was led by Juan Ortiz-Apuy, where they experimented with the viral trends of ASMR and unboxing. The resulting works are explorations of consumerism, capitalism, and perfectionism through curiosity and storytelling ― some light-hearted, humorous and soothing, some cacophonous and frustrated. Juxtaposed with the youth’s curated collections of objects, we are reminded of the colours, sounds and shapes used in consumer products and advertising to appeal to young people.

Video credits:

Emeline & Lynn, To Youth, 2024.

“Our video is about how capitalism tries to appeal to youth / kids by using bright colours and appealing sounds, in other words ‘sensory overload’.”

Mariève, Difference, 2024.

“I chose a variety of objects to show the differences between people but also they can still work together (like in the video).”

Dana & Naila, Fuzzy The Duck, 2024.

“This is the tale of the life and death of our hero Fuzzy Duck.”

Lee & Olivia, Mellow of Sounds, 2024.

“Our work was inspired by the lack of calm in our world. ASMR is supposed to be a calming and zen form of entertainment, but our video is bad at that. Each clip reflects the difficulties of having a perfect and calm existence.”

Anna & Raine, Pop the stress, 2024.

“The story of a frustrated girl being calmed down by popping pop-its as she travels from perfectionism to clutter to minimalism.”
