Youth Studio: Spoken Word and Performance Workshop with Bethel Afework
On Saturday 17 August, 11am to 4pm, join a full-day workshop that explores Esker’s current exhibition, Deanna Bowen’s Black Drones in The Hive, through the lens of Spoken Word Poetry!
Led by local artist and entrepreneur Bethel Afework, youth will learn how to express their own truths, and tell their own stories through writing and performance.
This free full-day workshop will include activities about storytelling, artistic direction, writing, editing, and performance skills. Lunch will be provided.
Every youth participant that attends this workshop has an optional reserved spot at the public performance showcase Raw Voices by Alcove Centre for the Arts on Friday 30 August.

Bethel Afework is an educator, poet, musician, entrepreneur, and nature-lover who is passionate about making cities more enjoyable. Passionate about making Calgary a more welcoming city for all, Bethel founded Raw Voices in 2016; a spoken word, comedy and music show that runs monthly with open mics and feature performers. Currently, Bethel is the Executive Director and Co-founder of Alcove Centre for the Arts. Alcove is a non-profit recreational art space with the mission to make arts more accessible by creating welcoming spaces where everyone can foster their creativity. Visit the recreational art space in the heart of downtown, which is open 5 days a week for drop-ins!
